On-Site Job Training
On-site job training is a practical approach to acquiring new competencies and skills needed for a job in a real working environment. Learn how to use particular tools and develop skills in a live-work practice, simulated, or training environment. Also, get a chance to connect with employers.
Skills learned include:
Entrepreneur/Financial Literacy
Luminary Ministries has partnered with BFI Treasures to inspire a spirit of entrepreneurship and job training as a great deal of young people are gifted with unique ideas. Many of these individuals have an interest in starting and growing a business, but due to the lack of support and guidance, they are often unaware of how and where to start. We provide entrepreneurship classes to assist with starting and growing their business.
Program includes hands-on training in the following areas: entrepreneurship, marketing, website design, inventory, finances, budgeting, business plans, and internships. Learn money basics, management, and savings using the Boss Club Curriculum. The Boss Club Curriculum was taught in over 100 schools across the U.S., has helped thousands of students successfully start their own business.
Skills for Employment Training (S.E.T.)
S.E.T for Success Program is a group and/or individualized program that assists individuals in workplace success. S.E.T for Success is a “teach and train” model for each individual and their needs. S.E.T for Success covers the following objectives: Communication, Work Experience, Transferable/Soft Skills, Self-Advocating and Workplace Success.
Every individual who participates in the S.E.T for Success program has unique strengths and abilities that will add to the “teach and train” model. This program has been created for all youth, regardless of disability or differences in learning style, and has been designed with the participants’ learning styles in mind.
Each activity has been structured with a time, materials, directions, brief description, and journaling activity (learn more).
Parenthood / Case Management
According to the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District: The 2020 Bexar County birth rate for 15-19 years-old was 22.3 births per 1,000, with teen births higher amongst Hispanic/Latino population. Over 16% teen births were “repeat teen births”. The birth rate for women ages of 20-24 was 63 births per 1,000.
For many teen moms and young parents some long-term challenges of having a child at an early age include financial hardship and being in need of public assistance (WIC, Medicaid, Food Stamps).
Teen/young parents’ education is affected as well, to include challenges to finishing high school and going to college. According to the CDC, only 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, where 90% of women who do not give birth during adolescence graduate from high school.
Luminary Ministries is prepared to help teens and young parents with a variety of classes, to include Parenting/Healthy relationships class “Love Notes”. We are prepared to help teen and young parents through case management. We provide emergency food, diapers, wipes, clothing, hygiene products and more. Our heart is to help young parents with resources and to assist in their finances.
Foundations
According to South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless (SARAH) “of those who are in the foster care system, 44% reported not having a stable place to live upon exiting”.
Texas Foster Youth Justice project states that at age 18, a young person is considered an independent adult and has to leave the foster care system. They can receive extended case management help until the age of 21 and then they are on their own.
Data from Texas Casa has reported:
Unfortunately, placement options for foster youth, particularly those over age 18 are limited. This is why, we are on a mission to help those in our community by offering our programs, helping them with skills to become stable and secure, as well as providing reliability through guidance and mentorship.
We will be offering transitional housing for youth and young adults aging out of the Foster Care system, as well as youth and young adults at risk of homelessness.
